Thermal Cameras for Home Heat Loss: TOPDON or FLIR?
A thermal camera can help reveal surface-temperature patterns, but it cannot size a heat pump or calculate your home's heat loss on its own. For occasional investigation, consider borrowing or hiring one first. If you expect repeated use, choose between a phone attachment and a separate handheld device before comparing specifications.
This is a documentary comparison of three references checked on Amazon UK and against manufacturer information on 25 September 2026. We have not carried out a side-by-side field test, measured accuracy or ranked them by reliability.
Three formats to consider
TOPDON TC001
A phone-connected option for a compatible Android device.
Check first: the phone model, USB-C connection and app support. This is not an iPhone accessory.

A handheld option with its own screen, without a phone attached.
Check first: the exact version and its native sensor resolution, rather than only the enhanced image size.

A phone accessory combining thermal and visible-image detail through FLIR software.
Check first: the Android version and connector. Other FLIR One variants use different connections.

The TC001 connects to a supported Android phone or tablet; TOPDON also documents Windows support. Its native thermal sensor resolution is 256 × 192. Enhanced image sizes advertised on some listings should not be confused with the number of native detector pixels.
This format suits someone who already has a compatible device and wants to keep images in an app. The trade-off is dependence on the phone, connector and software. Check the exact handset before purchase, including whether a thick case prevents the accessory fitting correctly.
A USB-C socket alone does not establish compatibility. In particular, do not assume that an Android accessory will work with a USB-C iPhone.
TOPDON TC004 Mini: a separate handheld screen
The TC004 Mini reference linked here has its own screen. The Amazon UK listing describes a native 128 × 128 sensor with an enhanced 240 × 240 image. Similar product names can refer to different versions, so compare the exact reference rather than merging specifications from several listings.
A separate device avoids keeping a phone attached during a walk around the home. It also introduces another device to charge and a separate workflow for saving or transferring images. Check those practical details in the manual before paying for capabilities you may not use.
FLIR One Pro: check the connector and image processing
The Android USB-C version linked here uses FLIR's thermal and visible-image processing. FLIR documents a native thermal resolution of 160 × 120 for this model. A higher processed image size is not the same thing as a larger native thermal sensor.
Visible-image detail can help recognise the part of a room being examined, but it does not remove measurement limitations. Check the current phone compatibility list, app requirements and connector version. The FLIR One name covers more than one product.
What a thermal image can and cannot establish
A camera records infrared radiation from surfaces and converts it into an image and estimated temperatures. It does not see through a wall. A colder patch can have several explanations, including construction details, air movement or moisture. The image alone does not identify the cause conclusively.
Reflections, shiny surfaces, direct sunshine, recent heating changes and outdoor conditions can complicate interpretation. A colourful image is not a heat-loss calculation. Use it to document a question for a qualified surveyor or installer rather than to prescribe insulation or a heating-system size.
For heat pump planning, the designer still needs a room-by-room assessment, suitable emitters and operating assumptions. Our heat pump brand comparison explains the information to request in a complete quotation.
A sensible home-check workflow
- Read the device manual and learn how its temperature scale and settings work.
- Record the room, surface and conditions with each image so the finding can be understood later.
- Repeat a suspicious observation under comparable conditions before drawing a conclusion.
- Keep a normal photograph alongside the thermal image to show the location.
- Discuss persistent patterns with an appropriate professional before disruptive work.
Do not open electrical equipment, remove safety covers or interfere with a heat pump to obtain an image. A domestic inspection tool does not qualify its owner to diagnose or repair electrical or refrigerant systems.
Buying, hiring or booking a survey?
Hire or borrow if the question is a one-off and you can obtain guidance on the instrument. Buy if you have a recurring use and are willing to learn the measurement limits. Book a professional assessment when the decision involves significant building work, unexplained damp or a heating design.
Compare the total cost with the value of the decision. Buying a camera solely to choose between two heat pump quotations may add less value than asking both installers to explain their design assumptions.
Questions people ask
Can a camera tell me which heat pump size to buy?
No. A thermal image does not provide the building's design heat loss in kilowatts. A proper assessment uses the building and room characteristics with stated assumptions.
Is the largest advertised resolution always best?
Check whether it describes the native sensor or a processed image. Interface, compatibility and interpretation also matter.
Can the TC001 work with an iPhone using USB-C?
The reference selected here is the Android model. Do not buy it on the assumption that a matching connector makes it compatible with iOS.
Is a cold patch proof of a leak?
No. It is an observation to investigate, not a diagnosis. Several conditions can create temperature differences.
